I was browsing Facebook yesterday morning and came across a post from 2004 Olympic Champion, Paul Hamm, offering free gymnastics coaching via online video. My first thought was, "Wow ... What a great idea!" My second thought was "Wow, is he crazy? Who wouldn't send him a video!" So, I messaged Paul and asked him if I could promote it for him. I thought of all the aspiring gymnasts out there that could benefit from the insight of one of the greatest gymnasts ever ... and how easy it is now to send someone your gymnastics video.

Back handsprings can be spotted with one hand on the lower back and the other hand on the closer hamstring. If the spotter stands on the left of the gymnast the right hand goes on the back and the left hand on the nearer hamstring. During the second flying phase the hands switch the left to the abdominal area and the right to the lower back to assist with any problems during the landing.

American Gymnast has offered Gymnastics on Demand as a subscription-based online video training system for coaches, gym owners, and gymnasts for the last several years. Today, I'm excited to announce that all of the videos in that system are being added to YouTube so that the entire gymnastics community can now view them for FREE! There are approximately 1200 videos that are currently being uploaded!

The circle is the basic foundation for learning skills on pommel horse. It is imperative that gymnasts learn the proper technique of the circle early in their career to ensure growth in routine difficulty, stability, and efficiency. The ideal body position on the circle is a straight body. This position enables the gymnast to maintain an even weight distribution throughout a routine, and allows for a more rhythmic swing and fluid transition between skills.

I mentioned in a previous blog that the men’s international field has been much deeper than the women’s in the last couple of years. While that is certainly true, I’ve also noticed that we’re probably seeing more original skills on the women’s side, particularly on bars and beam. As much as we all often criticize the new code of points, you have to admit that we have seen the absolutely coolest combinations on those two events in the last few years.
